Appointed by Governor Rudy Perpich on April 2, 1984. Elected 1986, 1992, and 1998.

Retired April 4, 2008.

Appointed and assigned to serve on the Court of Appeals as a Senior Judge.


Born Little Falls, Minnesota Aug. 31, 1940.  Married to Monica Eichten Randall, three adult children; presently resides in Center City, Minnesota.


High school education at St. John's Preparatory School, Collegeville, MN; college degree from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, B.A. cum laude, 1962. Participant General Electric College Bowl 1960. Law Degree from University of Minnesota Law School, J.D., 1967. Member Gamma Eta Gamma legal fraternity.

Career History:

Second Lieutenant USMC.

Law Clerk Hennepin County District Court 1967. 

Headed general practice law firm, with emphasis on criminal defense, in Hibbing, MN 1967-1984.

Adjunct professor, University of Hamline Law School, 1990-present.  Instructor in "Law, Literature, and Humanity."

Past member of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission.

Lectured on criminal law and the philosophical concepts of justice and due process at CLE seminars and criminal justice institutes.

Bar Admissions and Memberships:

Admitted to state and federal practice in Minnesota, Oct. 1967.
Admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981.
Member, Iron Range, Minnesota State and American Bar Associations.

Community Activities:

Active in supporting the Native American Community in Minnesota.

Active with inner-city support groups in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area; provides support on a volunteer basis to men and women inmates in Minnesota state prisons.
