Judge Margaret H. Chutich

Judge Margaret H. Chutich was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to the Minnesota Court of Appeals on December 27, 2011. Elected in 2014. Current term expires Jan. 2021.  


Judge Chutich received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1980, and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School in 1984.  She also studied Croatian at the University of Zagreb in 1980-1981.


Before being appointed to the Court, Judge Chutich served for three years as Assistant Dean at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.  From 1996 to 2008, Judge Chutich worked at the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, including positions as Deputy Attorney General of the Law Enforcement Section (1996-1998), and Assistant Attorney General with the criminal and human services divisions (1999-2008).   She also worked in the criminal division prosecuting crimes and handling criminal appeals during the years 1992-1994.  From 1994 to 1996, Judge Chutich prosecuted violent and general crimes as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Minnesota.   

Before entering public service, Judge Chutich practiced law privately for five years at the law firms of Tanick & Heins, 1986-1989, and Opperman Heins & Paquin 1989 – 1991, working in the areas of labor law, securities fraud and antitrust class actions, employment discrimination and environmental law.  From 1984 to 1986, Judge Chutich clerked for the Honorable Diana E. Murphy in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
