A lawyer-member position is open on the nine-member Minnesota State Board of Law Examiners. The term will begin January 1, 2010.
The all-volunteer Board is made up of seven attorneys and twp public members. The Board is responsible for drafting, editing, and administering the Minnesota Bar Exam as well as overseeing bar applicants' character and fitness screening and certification process.
The members of the Board meet 12 times per year for meetings and hearings that range in length from four to eight hours. An additional two to three hours of preparation is required prior to meetings and hearings.
Matters considered by the Board include reviewing policy and administrative issues, reviewing and selecting bar exam questions, and conducting due process hearings with respect to applicants denied due to issues of bad character or lack of fitness for admission. Public members participate fully in all matters and are voting members, as are attorney members. The Board employs an Executive Director and a staff of eight.
Board members are reimbursed for costs of travel and lodging, if necessary.
Persons interested in being considered for appointment should submit a letter of interest and curriculum vitae by Friday, October 23, 2009, to Frederick K. Grittner, Clerk of the Appellate Courts, 25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 305, St. Paul, MN 55155.
