The management of court records is controlled by the Records Retention Schedule for the MN Judicial Branch and the law at MN Statute § 138.17 on keeping and destroying public records.

| MPA Remote is the public view of the MN Court Information System (MNCIS) as allowed by the MN Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch. NOTE: Online records do NOT include street addresses for parties, or information on pre-conviction criminal matters. Some information is only available at the courthouse or by calling the Hennepin County Criminal Court at (612)348-2040. Please do not rely on MPA Remote for background checks. Court documents cannot be viewed on MPA Remote at this time. |
Record Center Locations
Computers to search court records online are available at the Hennepin County Govt. Center (skyway level) next to Criminal Filing Counter. There is an $8 fee for a printed copy of a court document, and a $14 fee for a certified copy of a court document. Court files that are not yet in electronic format are maintained at the following locations:
How to Access Records by Case Type
| Civil Court Records |
There are two public computers available in the Record Center on the B-Level of the Hennepin Co. Govt Center. You may search for civil records on computer dating back to 1978. Older cases may be searched in person at that Records Center. |

| Criminal Court Records |
Most Hennepin Court records are available electronically at the courthouse. To request copies of a document from a court file, you may visit the Violations Bureau on the skyway level of the Hennepin Co. Govt Ctr. or one of the Suburban Courthouse locations. There is an $8 fee for a printed copy of a court document, and a $14 fee for a certified copy of a court document. People can also search records online using MNCIS computers at the courthouse. |

| Conciliation Court Records |
Recent cases can be searched online using MNCIS (MPA Remote). Older cases may be searched in person at the Conciliation Court, located in the Minneapolis City Hall, 350 S. 5th St. in Minneapolis. |

| Family Court Records |
Divorces, custody, child support, paternity, and domestic abuse cases are located at the Family Justice Center, 110 S. 4th St. in downtown Minneapolis. |

Housing Court Records |
Cases involving landlord/tenant disputes are handled at the Housing Court located on the 3rd floor of the C-Tower in the Hennepin Co. Govt Center. |

| Judgments (recent) Search on Computer |
A judgment docketed within the last 10 years may be searched on the public computers in the Record Center on the B-Level of the Hennepin Co. Govt. Center. If you have questions, contact the Judgments Department at (612)348-3169. |

| Judgments (older) Search |
Civil judgments are kept for 10 years, at which time they expire. The files at that time can be destroyed if the judgment is not renewed. Copies of the judgments are kept in the file or on microfilm in the Record Center on the B-Level of the Hennepin Co. Govt Center. |

| Juvenile Court Records |
Child protection, juvenile delinquency and adoptions cases are located at the Juvenile Justice Center. For more information go to Juvenile Records.

| Other Case Types |
Other case types may be searched using the MNCIS computers on the Public Service Level (2nd floor) of the Hennepin Co. Govt Center. |

| Probate & Mental Health Court Records |
"Open" Probate and Mental Health files are housed in the file room on floor C-400 of the Hennepin County Courthouse. "Closed" Probate and Mental Health files are stored on the B-level of the Hennepin Co. Govt. Center. or are transported off-site. Original microfilm is stored in an underground storage facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. |

| Microfilm Search |
Prior to 1978, civil records were kept on microfilm. These records date back to 1880. Plaintiff/defendant microfilm tapes are located in the Family Court Records Center. The Record Center staff will help you search for these older case files. You will need to know the names of the parties and the approximate date of the original filing of the case in order to find the file. Records staff will then have to request that microfilm be sent to their office. |

| Naturalization Record Search |
Declaration of intent papers and oath of naturalization papers are maintained at the MN Historical Society. |
