The Minnesota Supreme Court has chosen Susan M. Humiston to serve as the new director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility (OLPR). Her appointment is effective March 7.

The OLPR was established by the Minnesota Supreme Court to oversee and administer the state’s lawyer discipline system. The office investigates and pursues complaints against attorneys warranting professional discipline. In addition, the OLPR does a substantial amount of continuing legal education for lawyers in the area of professional responsibility and legal ethics.

As Director, Humiston will oversee the 11 attorneys and various support staff that comprise the OLPR.

Humiston is an attorney with more than 20 years of experience in the Twin Cities business community. She most recently served as vice president and assistant general counsel at a Fortune 500 manufacturing company in Anoka. Prior to that, she spent 13 years in private practice at Leonard, Street and Deinard (now Stinson Leonard Street) representing a wide range of product manufacturing companies. While in private practice, Humiston served as an investigator for the Fourth District Ethics Committee, and as a member of the Minneapolis Ethical Practices Board. Before entering private practice, she served as a judicial law clerk for United States District Court Judge David S. Doty.

“Susan is an experienced attorney with significant litigation and management expertise, and a passion for maintaining high standards of performance,” said Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea. “Her proven legal skills, ethics background, and deep commitment to the practice of law will help guide the important work of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility.”

Humiston received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska and her Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law.

In addition to her professional background, Humiston currently serves as a board member for Doing Good Together and the Minnesota Boychoir. She is a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Minnesota State Bar Association, and the Hennepin County Bar Association.

Humiston succeeds Martin Cole, who retired on December 31, 2015, after nearly 10 years as director of the OLPR.
