Justice system officials to report on feedback received during 2017 listening session

On Wednesday, February 21, judges and other justice system leaders from Minnesota’s Tenth Judicial District will host a community listening session at the Fridley Community Center. The event, which will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., will give area residents an opportunity to share ideas, concerns, and other feedback related to Minnesota’s court system.

A similar community listening session was held at the Fridley Community Center in January 2017. During the 2017 session, judges and other officials met with residents in a small group format, and discussed a wide variety of issues related to access to the courts, fairness in the justice system, and public trust and understanding of the judiciary. Read a summary of the issues discussed at the 2017event. At the upcoming February 21 event, justice system officials will also provide an update on how the local court system has used the feedback generated at the 2017 session to improve the court’s service to the public.

More information about the event can be found on the 10th Judicial District Community Dialogue and Listening Session webpage.

“More than any other part of government, our justice system depends on maintaining the trust and confidence of the people we serve,” said Tenth Judicial District Judge Daniel O'Fallon. “By having these types of informal, open discussions with community members, we have the opportunity not only to educate the public about the work of the courts, but to gather direct feedback on how people view our justice system. This type of two-way dialogue is critical to ensuring our courts continue to meet the needs and expectations of all Minnesotans.”

The February 21 community listening session is free and open to the public, and no preregistration is needed to attend. Light refreshments will be served. The Fridley Community Center is located at 6085 Seventh Street NE in Fridley, MN (map).

The community listening session is sponsored by the Tenth Judicial District Equal Justice Committee. All 10 of Minnesota’s judicial districts have an equal justice committee, which partner with the Minnesota Judicial Branch Committee for Equality and Justice to advance efforts to eliminate bias from court operations, promote equal access to the court, and inspire a high level of trust and public confidence in the Minnesota Judicial Branch.
