Learn more about 2020 Criminal Filings in Hennepin County.

In 2020, the total number of Criminal Court filings was 266,744. In general, even before the covid-19 pandemic, Hennepin County Criminal Court filings have been declining between 2017 and 2020 as the trendline suggests.

Felony Filings

The total number of filings were down slightly in 2020 compared to 2017. However, the number of felony filings in Hennepin County District Court have been relatively stable between 2017 and 2020.

The number of homicide cases filed were 81 in 2017, 55 in 2018, 64 in 2019, and 94 in 2020. The number of sex crime cases filed were 240 in 2017, 215 in 2018, 266 in 2019, and 249 in 2020. The number of weapons felony cases filed 225 in 2017, 192 in 2018, 252 in 2019, and 397 in 2020. The number of “other” felony cases filed were 861 in 2017, 769 in 2018, 726 in 2019, and 630 in 2020. The number of property crimes filed were 1,729 in 2017, 1,629 in 2018, 1,727 in 2019, and 1880 in 2020. The number of drug felonies filed were 2,047 in 2017, 2,385 in 2018, 2,180 in 2019, and 1,651 in 2020. The number of “other person” felony cases filed were 1,926 in 2017, 1,870 in 2018, 1,966 in 2019, and 2,163 in 2020.

 

Non-Felony Filings

In total, non-felony filings (Gross Misdemeanors, Misdemeanors, and Petty Misdemeanors) were down in 2020 compared to 2016, 2017, and 2018. All types of non-felonies saw a marked decrease in 2020 compared to prior years.

Non-Felony Filings, by Division

When breaking out the number of non-felony filings by the division in which the cases were filed, all divisions saw a significant decrease in non-felony filings. Note: the former Southdale courthouse closed in early 2019. In response to this closure, Hennepin County Criminal Court created "Division 4" in in place of Southdale, while also re-orienting the cities associated with Ridgedale and Brookdale.
