What to Expect: Divorce
- If you are starting a divorce, or you have been served with divorce papers and you need to respond, you will watch a 30-minute video at the Family Court Self-Help Center before obtaining the forms. The video explains how to complete and serve the forms correctly. You may view the video between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. After watching the video, you will receive Part 1 of the divorce forms. You may also watch the video online by clicking "How to Start a Divorce."
- After completing the Part 1 forms, you may schedule a one-hour appointment (one hour and 30 minutes if the divorce involves children) with a Family Law Facilitator. At the appointment, the facilitator will review the completed forms, give you the Part 2 forms, and explain how to complete the divorce. (We regret we cannot hold your appointment if you arrive more than 10 minutes late.)
- You may schedule additional appointments for review of the papers needed to finalize the divorce.
- IMPORTANT! Before your divorce can be finalized, the Hennepin County District Court requires that parents of minor children who get a divorce in Hennepin County must attend a divorce education class. See Divorce Education Requirements for more details.
