Marriage Ceremonies
Get a Marriage License
At least five (5) days prior to your marriage ceremony, you must obtain a marriage license from the Hennepin County Service Center. Your marriage license expires after six (6) months.
Please note: You cannot marry on the day you obtain a marriage license. If there is an emergency, ask about getting a waiver of the five-day waiting period at the time you get the marriage license. For more detailed information about how to get a marriage license in Hennepin County, call (612)348-8240.
Schedule the Marriage Ceremony
You must schedule your marriage ceremony with a judge's clerk before your wedding date. Some judges can perform the ceremony in languages other than English. Some judges may be available outside of regular office hours. See the List of Judges for Marriage Ceremonies (PDF) to find contact information. Or, call the "Marriage Line" at (612)348-9962 to hear a recorded message of the list of Judges and their contact information.
Day of the Marriage Ceremony
When you arrive for your marriage ceremony, you must bring your marriage license papers and two (2) adults who can witness the ceremony. If necessary, some judges may assist in providing witnesses for you. You must make that request at the time you schedule your ceremony.
